Matthew Greenway was born in Heidelberg Germany to a US military family and spent much of his youth moving around the US. After completing high school in Washington State, he moved to Virginia and began an English degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. It was during this time that Matthew began to paint. After graduating in 1993, he moved to the New York metropolitan area to pursue a career in art. Like many artists, Matthew eventually moved to Brooklyn where he worked and lived as an artist for over ten years. During this time, he studied drawing at the National Academy of Design and painting at Brooklyn College with Lennart Anderson. Between 1999 and 2003, he ran his own exhibition space in South Williamsburg, curating 14 shows with various artists. He then went on to study drawing and printmaking at the New York Academy of Art where he received an MFA in 2005. He has since taught at Philadelphia University and Fleisher Art Memorial. He presently lives with his family in New Hampshire.
